Within the Deschutes Basin, the District diverts water from both the Deschutes River natural flow and stored water in Wickiup Reservoir. The proportion of natural to stored water diverted each changes based on the available water but on average 70% of water diverted into North Unit Irrigation District originated from storage in Wickiup Reservoir. The Reservoir is located 60 miles southwest of Bend; at capacity, Wickiup holds 200,000 acre-feet and covers an area of 10,000 acres. The reservoir is a popular fishing destination and is known for its population of large brown trout. Historically known as the Wickiup’s, the area was a fall camping spot for Native Americans. The Wickiup Dam was started in 1939 and completed a decade later.
